Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian was born in Canada, but was raised in the US. She's worked as a media critic since 1995. She was the creator of Feminist Frequency the website which includes videos and comments on portrayals of women in popular cultural. Anita Sarkeesian was a Canadian and American feminist media critique. Feminist Frequency is an educational non-profit website that investigates representations of women in the popular media narratives. Aiming to dispel the myths related to women in popular culture, she also works on issues related the gender-specific harassment of women as well as different classes of individuals online. Sarkeesian holds a Masters in political and social thinking at York University. As a public speaker, she is extremely sought-after and has spoken at TEDxWomen XOXO and United Nations Broadband Working Group. Since her early years she was intrigued by issues of gender identity and feminist thinking. When she was still in school, in 2009, she launched her Feminist Frequency Website. A woman with ambitions to start a web-series examining the representation of gender in video games, she was targeted by the internet campaign. The harassment didn't discourage her. The experience only strengthened her as a feminist journalist. She has won many awards for her contributions to feministism. Anita Sarkeesian won awards for her efforts as a critique of the media, and she founded Feminist Frequency. The nonprofit examines how women are depicted in pop culture today.
